Hashima(端島), better known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) due to its silhouette, is an abandoned island located just off the coast of Nagasaki city.
This small island has increased in popularity and is now getting world-wide attention for its mysterious environment and haunting atmosphere. It is also a relic of industrialization and architectural history.
Also, the island is similar to the location of the Castle in the Sky by Studio Ghibli.
Hashima island began to be populated in 1887 for mining. Three years later, in 1890, Mitsubishi Corporation bought the island also for coal mining. As production increased, the island was expanded, and large residential and industrial buildings were constructed.
In 1954 its population reached its peak with 5259 people. It had the highest population density in the world – 83,500 people/km2. In 1974 the coal mine closed and the island became completely uninhabited and deserted.
The island appears in a few movies too, like the 2003 Battle Royale II: Requiem, James Bond: Skyfall, Attack on Titan.
Tour boats are operated by several companies and depart from various locations in Nagasaki Port.
The cost for the trip is around 4000 JPY per person. Advance reservations are recommended especially on weekends and during the holidays.
