For Ghibli fans and especially Totoro fans visiting Japan, Mitaka’s Ghibli Museum is a must-visit. But there’s another place that should be on any Totoro fan’s list: the full-scale replica of Satsuki and Mei’s house from Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro).

Reservations must be made in advance. The house is located in the Japanese garden of the beautiful Morikoro park.  Morikoro park was also the site for the Aichi World Expo in 2005. It also houses an ice-skating rink, indoor waterpark, bicycle path and many other attractions.
Build in 2005, Satsuki and Mei’s house was created for the World’s Fair held near Nagoya, Japan. Totoro’s director’s son, Goro Miyazaki, designed and oversaw the house’s construction.

Like in the movie, the house represents the architecture of the Showa period (60’s), and every single corner of the house has been attended to with precision for details.

The house was created to look like the house in the movie (the one Satsuki and Mei’s mother returned home to).
In the 30 minute tour, photos are not permitted inside the house (outside is allowed) but in return visitors are allowed to touch everything, this includes opening up all drawers, boxes, lids, doors, windows, hidden doors, clothes, shoes… basically everything inside the house.

Please come and see it!
